Applying for planning permission? As part of the planning process you may need to have a bat survey carried out on your site.

In Ireland all of the nine confirmed resident bat species and their roosts are protected by Irish and EU law as all species have declined in numbers and some are endangered.

It is an offence to deliberately capture, injure or kill a bat in Ireland.

In addition it is an offence to damage or destroy a place of shelter (roost) of a bat, regardless of whether bats are present or not.

A bat roost is difficult to identify if you are unfamiliar with bat activity, it is therefore essential to have a scoping bat survey carried out before any works are carried out on a site.

Can Bats
Stop a development?

It is very rare that bats will stop a development project, however measures may be required to be incorporated into the project in order to allow bats to continue using the site after the completion of the development.

Timing
We carry out bat surveys throughout Ireland, these include scoping surveys which is a preliminary survey for roost sites.

A scoping survey assesses the possibility of the presence of bats by doing a desktop study and a day time site visit. This can be carried out at any time of the year, but unless this survey conclusively dismisses the possibility of bats, a night time activity monitoring survey is necessary.

The night-time survey records bat activity on the site and can only be undertaken when climatic conditions are conducive to bat activity, ideally between May and October. Bat roost tree surveys can also be completed if required by our qualified arborists.

At Eire Ecology we specialise in bat surveys and with years of experience in completing small to large scale surveys, we have the knowledge, tools and personnel to see your project through to completion. CUTTING EDGE SURVEY METHODS AND HARDWARE

EQUIPMENT

BAT DETECTORS

At Eire Ecology, for our bat Surveys, we use time expansion ultrasonic bat detectors – the latest technology in bat detecting, which can be used to identify bat species to the highest degree.

The national roads authority (NRA) recommend this type of detector as standard.

STATIC DETECTORS

When completing more complex bat surveys we regularly utilise passive bat detectors allowing us to monitor an area over several nights, weeks or even months.

These detectors record onto an SD card and analysed later using Kaleidoscope (wildlife acoustic) software.

NIGHT VISION CAMCORDER

Night vision camcorders offer an invaluable service in strengthening survey methodologies when examining buildings for the presence of active bat roosts.

At Eire Ecology we typically deploy such a camcorder when performing night surveys on potential roost features.

THERMAL IMAGING

Thermal imaging cameras determine the presence of bats in trees, bat boxes and other structures; and to identify flight lines and foraging behaviour in order to aid the assessment of impacts on rare species of bat. This aids surveying of potential tree roosts as thermal imaging can locate bats hidden within ivy clumps and within fissures and knots.
